Lakki Kidonias - Omalos Plateau

17 Nov 2019

One-day hiking activity in the foothills of the White Mountains, with walking in the old paths and a rural road.

Route: Start hiking from Lakki village square, around 09:00 - 09:30 am. First we follow a downhill path for about 20 minutes to the stream bed below the village south and slightly west, some sections of this trail are steep and if it is raining, they will be extremely slippery, requiring good use of hiking trails and naturally fit footwear (hiking boots rather than sneakers). Once we reach the riverbed, we follow it for a while and then turn left and always in the south direction beginning to climb a path and now having the ravine we have just left.
This trail is steadily uphill, but without any difficulty in walking, except for a part of it that has collapsed from last year's heavy rainfall. There it takes some care as we skip left for a few meters but then return to the original trail. Because it may have been a bad weather before our hike, increased attention is also needed on the one hand because of the possible slippage, but also because of our movement on the creek. After hiking for about 1 - 1.5 hours, on the side of the mountain above the ravine, we reach an open small basin where the ravine forms a fork. We always turn left uphill and after about half an hour we reach the end of the trail in a livestock tern, down the rural road that ends at "Poria".
We follow the rural road to the point where our signpost "climbs" to a forest hill section, just above the Omalos Plateau and south of us. This point is steep and requires the attention and assistance of our hands to climb to the point where it becomes normal and "enters" the forest. We then walk the last part of our route, always uphill into the woods for about an hour (the trail there is somewhat irregular and not visible) to the end of the main road, which goes to the Omalos Plateau. When we arrive there will be a suitable time for rest, food or coffee for anyone who wishes and the departure for Chania will be around 16:00 - 16:30 pm.

Particular attention is given to the use of suitable footwear (certainly mountaineering boots) and a walking stick, especially for the first part of the route. Also, because of the current data there is a possibility of light rain, it is necessary to have a raincoat with us.
